What are digital wallet scams?

  • Digital wallet scams occur when you are contacted, usually by SMS or email, asking for personal information. It may look like it has come from a trusted company such as a bank, telco or government agency tricking you into taking a specific action which includes sharing card and one-time passwords.

It may ask you to click on a link directing you to a scammer’s website that looks like a genuine website or asks you to enter your card details which results in a NetCode being generated. Then you are tricked into sharing this confidential information like a NetCode.

By sharing both your card details and the code, the scammer can enter your card details into a digital wallet on another phone, tablet or watch. This allows the scammer to start spending on your card.

Tips to keep your digital wallet safe

Check your digital wallet

In an Australian major bank first, the new Review digital wallets feature in the CommBank app provides a convenient way to view and delete digital wallets which have your debit or credit card in it. If you notice any suspicious activity on your accounts, you can secure your money by deregistering any digital wallets that you don’t recognise. Find your digital wallet check feature under card settings in the CommBank app.

Guarding your login

Never share your login details, PINs or NetCodes with anyone, even someone claiming to be from the bank.

Use strong passwords or biometrics

You can ensure your mobile device is protected with a strong password, PIN or biometric authentication such as fingerprint or facial recognition. This adds an extra layer of protection if your device is lost or stolen.

Stay vigilant

Always question any email or SMS that has a link, even messages from familiar companies under the same contact or message thread. Scammers use clever tactics to trick you into clicking on links and providing personal details, so take your time to review the message.
