What are you passionate about?

Lots! Generally to do with the QLD outdoor lifestyle. I’m passionate about improving my golf game, encouraging more girls to join the sport, fishing and running training with my dog Alfie.

When did you start investing?

My journey into the world of investing began in 2018. However, it was in 2020 that I truly embraced it and revamped my financial habits and dove deep into increasing my financial literacy, transforming a casual interest into a personal commitment.

What are you investing for?

I’m investing in my future, aiming to create opportunities and secure a comfortable life. It’s about ensuring that my future self isn’t solely dependent on superannuation or savings but has a robust financial foundation to support my lifestyle. Whether that’s in 5, 15 or 25 years I don’t know yet.

Describe your approach to investing

My investment strategy is a blend of regularity and calculated risk. I split my investments into two halves: one automated, with recurring buys in large caps or index funds, and the other driven by monthly smaller selections. I’m at an age where I can take more risks, this approach suits my current goals.

What’s in your portfolio?

I have a mixed portfolio of index funds for ASX & S&P, Commodities ETFs, REITs, energy and mining shares, large-caps, and Bitcoin.

What shares are you watching and why?

I’m particularly interested in the energy transition and keeping an eye on mining companies and precious metals poised to benefit from this evolving dynamic.

Biggest investing win?

In the last 12 months, my biggest win has been from the uranium boom.

Biggest investing loss?

My early investing days taught me a good lesson. I was shaken out of my first individual share purchase within six months due to a poor quarterly report. Though it rebounded, it was a reminder of the importance of patience and resilience.

What makes you feel confident?

My confidence comes from continuous learning and a solid strategy, knowing that nothing is permanent. With a reliable system, I embrace risks, stay prepared for any outcome and enjoy my life.

What worries you?

The future global economy concerns me, particularly for the younger generation. So, I often wonder – am I doing enough to best set myself and my family up for long-term success?

What learnings can you share with someone just starting out?

For those just beginning, my advice is to become your own best researcher. With so many voices vying for your attention, it’s crucial to find a few trusted resources. Books like The Psychology of Money and Girls That Invest can provide a solid foundation. Start with a large index like ASX or S&P to get a feel for the market, and remember, the strength to do nothing during market fluctuations is key. Stick to your system and resist the urge to react impulsively (easier said than done).  Once you start, automate as much as possible or start a side account that you top up bit by bit till you can invest the minimum, every bit helps!

Why do you invest with CommSec / CommSec Pocket?

I invest with CommSec because it seamlessly integrates with my financial system, providing easy access to all my equity investments. CommSec Pocket allows me to invest in ETFs in regular fee-efficient chunks, $2 a trade is a finance win itself.

TIL (today I learned)?

It’s whale season at the moment, and the patterns on the fluke (tail) of humpback whales are unique to each individual – like our fingerprints!

The little win you want to celebrate this week?

I love all the little wins, running 10km with my dog, playing golf, and every morning my delicious coffee is a little win. It’s also my investing week and the markets are down, so buying at a discount is a little win too (even though I buy either way).
