Through our Indigenous Careers Programs, we’re aiming to help build strong, independent communities while also ensuring that our business reflects the diversity of the communities we serve.
Our School Based Traineeship Program is designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Year 11 and 12.
The program gives students a taster of a career in the financial services industry and also allows us to find and promote the best and brightest young talent.
Along with vital on-the-job experience, the program gives students the opportunity to gain valuable skills and confidence in a safe and secure environment.
Our Full-Time Traineeship Program offers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander job seekers with the opportunity to develop into a role over 12 – 18 months.
Participants receive ongoing training and support to build their skills and confidence, with the potential to be offered a permanent position once they complete the traineeship.
In partnership with CareerTrackers, we provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students with an opportunity to gain first-hand experience aligned to their degree, plus a pathway onto CommBank’s Graduate Program.

“Working as an Enterprise Services (ES) Indigenous Academy Intern while studying has been life changing. So far, I’ve worked on refactoring the legacy code in the CommBank app, and worked as an Android developer. Not only have I been given the trust of my leaders to work on our technology, but I’m creating generational wealth in my family.
I found financial wellbeing articles on Thrive, an online tool for employees. This opened my eyes to managing and investing money. Now I’m having important money talks with family, and creating generational wealth together, which is exciting because my partner and I are looking to buy our first home together.
I have big career and community goals, and I know being an Intern at CommBank is the first step to achieving them. Career wise I want to become a technical manager running teams of engineers. I also want to go back home to the Torres Strait to share knowledge with my communities on STEM. "I started at the Bank more than seven years ago in the Indigenous School Based Traineeship Program. I still remember looking at the website one day and seeing photos of the Sydney city office and thinking ‘I’m going to work there one day’. A few years later when I was at university, I got that opportunity. I completed an internship with CareerTrackers, which opened the doors to apply for the CommBank Summer Internship Program and later the Graduate Program.
One of my favourite memories as a Grad was creating a podcast series. As Interns and Graduates, you get access to some of the brightest minds in the world and are constantly inspired, but I found the only way we could remember these inspiring talks, was by referring back to our notes and thoughts. I had an idea to adapt the sessions to podcasts, and my leaders supported me in making this happen. I’ve learned so much along the way, including how to edit and publish podcasts, but I’ve also met the most incredible people too. This experience put it into perspective for me that no matter who you are, or what your idea is, there’s always people across the Bank who’ll help you.”
Co-created by Kuku Yalanji and Woopaburra artist Leona McGrath, Indigenous organisation Yerrabingin, CommBank’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous employees, and members of the community, the creative design visually expresses our refreshed brand and values.
The artwork is designed to symbolise the Bank’s respect for and celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures as part of our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
The design conveys three central themes: Community, Connections and Wellbeing, and pairs some of the CommBank colours with traditional Aboriginal designs to create an artwork and narrative that will conjure connectedness and pride with our customers, communities and our people.
Artist Leona McGrath is a proud Aboriginal woman who is originally from Queensland from the Woopaburra People of Great Keppel Island and Kuku Yalanji People of Far North Queensland, and has been painting for over 30 years.
