About the Program

Our Career Comeback Program is a paid program for experienced professionals who’ve taken a career break of two years or more and are looking to return to the workforce.

We know that there are well qualified, brilliant people out there who have found it difficult to return to the workforce after a hiatus. This program demonstrates our commitment to providing opportunities to people with different life experiences, who can add perspective and new ideas to the way we approach things.

We run several Career Comeback intakes throughout the year across a variety of disciplines, including Banking, Technology, Operations and more. Typically run over a 12–20-week period, the program is designed to provide you with re-entry support and training you need to thrive. 

You’ll join a team where your skills and experience will be highly valued. You’ll have access to a comprehensive induction process, career coaching, bespoke learning and development initiatives and fantastic networking opportunities to support your transition back to work.

Upon completion of the program, if you feel we’re the right fit and you have demonstrated your ability and motivation to succeed, there are opportunities to transition into a permanent role with us.

What's involved?

  • A structured program on a paid fixed-term contract (up to 20 weeks), with the opportunity to roll into a permanent position at the end of the program pending performance
  • Flexible work options, hours and arrangements that work for you*
  • Comprehensive on-boarding and industry-specific skills training
  • Access to career coaching and a dedicated buddy
  • A people leader and program manager who will assist you in your transition back to work, with regular check-ins

* Flexible working arrangements depend on the nature of the role. We’ll work with you on an arrangement that best suits you. 

Eligibility criteria

  • Our Career Comeback Program is designed for people who:

    • Have taken a career break of two years or more (essential)
    • Are interested in returning to work on a permanent basis (both part-time and full-time options available)
    • Have at least three years of relevant professional experience
    • Possess a growth mindset and strong motivation to succeed
    • Have permanent Australian working rights

Application process

  • Step 1: Online application

    Submit your CV and a cover letter outlining your interests in the Career Comeback Program.

    Step 2: Telephone discussion

    If you have relevant experience and fit the program requirements, we’ll call you to have a chat about your application and invite you to interview with us. At this point we may also ask you to complete some psychometric testing so that we can assess your active learning and problem-solving skills.

    Step 3: First interview

    Your first interview will be with a number of business representatives from the team that you’ve applied for and will involve a variety of behavioural and technical questions.  We’ll let you know if your interview will be held virtually or in person, and our Career Comeback Program Manager will help prepare you for your interview and share some helpful tips and tricks before you meet with us. If you're successful in progressing through this stage, you will be invited to a second interview in the following weeks.

    Step 4: Second interview   

    Your second interview will be held by a more senior member of the team and most likely will be in person so that you can get a sense of our offices and team culture.

    Step 5: Offer

    Successful candidates will receive news of their offer at least six weeks prior to the program start date.

Here's what you need to know about our 12-week paid program, designed to support experienced professionals in their return to work.

To be considered for the Career Comeback Program, candidates must meet the below criteria:

  • You are currently on a career break (for two years or more)*
  • You have at least 3+ years of relevant professional experience
  • You have permanent Australian working rights

* Taking part in consulting/freelance work or having generated some income from non-professional activities (including work in Academia) does not disqualify applicants.

No. We have a wide range of opportunities available that welcome a variety of backgrounds. For example, in our non-client facing teams, candidates with backgrounds in operations, technology, risk, consulting, project management or business law are encouraged to apply.

We recruit candidates with varying levels of experience and have hired candidates with 3-20 years' experience across Senior Associate, Manager and Senior Manager positions. The salaries on offer vary, and depend on the specific role and your level of experience.

We recruit for Career Comeback multiple times throughout the year, and look for candidates across a variety of areas including Banking, Technology and Operations. We typically allow for at least six weeks between offer and start date to allow for candidates ample time to prepare for work. At CommBank, we work flexibly. For some, this may mean four days per week, or finishing at 4pm each day to pick up your kids. Fleixible working arrangements depend on the nature of the role and team you apply for, and we’re happy to work with you to understand how this opportunity can flex to suit your lifestyle.

You'll be eligible for a permanent position post completion of the Career Comeback Program. This offer is not guaranteed and will be based on performance.
